June is Men’s Health Month, so what better time than to stop and take a good look at how you’re taking care of yourself? Caring for your mind and body now means you’ll likely be healthier when you’re older. Even if you’ve made some mistakes in the past, health-wise, there’s no time like the present to focus on feeling good.
Find ways to unwind
Chances are you probably live a pretty stressful life. Adulthood is a lot to deal with! Finding healthy ways to deal with your stress and tension is imperative, not just for your mental health but for your heart health too. Don’t overwork yourself or spend hours lazing around watching TV; find meaningful ways to unwind and relax, like long walks, a good book, pursuing a hobby, getting a massage, or gardening. If it helps you chill (healthfully!), do it and enjoy it.
Another way to reduce your stress load is to talk about your feelings. Many men keep their feelings bottled up, which isn’t a healthy way to process emotions! If you can’t talk it out with a friend or your partner, consider finding a therapist to help you navigate the ups and downs of the day.
Drink more water
Do you go from coffee in the morning to whiskey, wine, or beer at night? Make sure you’re hitting your H2O goals with adequate water consumption throughout the day. Men should consume about eight eight oz. glasses of water per day.
Schedule regular checkups
Another way to make sure you’re hitting your goals and staying on track, health-wise, is to make regular medical and dental appointments. Visit your doctor and dentist for a yearly checkup to ensure everything is running smoothly. Dental health can also be a key indicator of potential heart disease, so don’t slack off on visiting the dentist!
Don’t forget to schedule a skin check during your physical exam to check for abnormal moles and sun damage, which could potentially become cancerous if left unchecked. Daily SPF application is a must for men too, so start using an SPF 30 facial sunscreen regularly, as well as SPF on any exposed skin throughout the day.
See where you’re falling short
Are you eating too much of one food group and not enough of another? Are you drinking a few too many cocktails during the week, or smoking occasionally? Could you stand to add a few more servings of veggies to your plate each day? Figure out where you’re off track and right the ship ASAP, as it will be beneficial in the long run.
If you know you’re not getting an adequate amount of a certain vitamin or mineral, you may want to consider taking a supplement. Our Epresat® Adult Liquid Multivitamin & Herbal Supplement is a good place to start and is easy to work into your routine.
Swap that cocktail for a mocktail
Chances are you can’t, and shouldn’t, drink the way you did in your college days. The National Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention advises men drink no more than two alcoholic drinks per day, but if you’re looking to decrease your booze intake, swap the beer or Old Fashioned for a seltzer with a splash of bitters, like Gallexier® Herbal Bitters Liquid Herbal Supplement, which tastes great and also supports healthy digestion.*
